Somerset Place Plantation

Somerset Place was the third-largest plantation in North Carolina by the end of the antebellum period. During its nearly 100 years of operation, more than 850 enslaved people lived and worked on the plantation. It was established as a State Historic Site in 1967. Dorothy Spruill Redford spent 10 years tracing the those enslaved at Somerset and their descendants, culminating in regular events known as “Somerset homecomings.” To date, more than 3,000 descendants have attended these events.
