Pea Island Lifesavers

The Pea Island Life-Saving Station on the Outer Banks of North Carolina was the first and only life-saving station in the country to have an all-Black crew, and a Black man, Richard Etheridge, as commanding officer. The original Pea Island Cookhouse now exists as the Pea Island Cookhouse Museum in Manteo. Read more about the museum in information provided by the Pea Island Preservation Society.
