Princeville, North Carolina

Service Mural Panel 1

Freedom Hill was a community of freed slaves established following the Civil War. In 1885 it was incorporated in Edgecombe County and renamed Princeville in honor of African American Turner Prince, who had played a role in the construction in many of the community’s homes. It is the oldest town chartered by Blacks in America. The Princeville Museum, originally a Rosenwald School, documents the unique history of the community. Learn more about Princeville.
