North Carolina School Integration

In 1954, the U.S. Supreme Court declared the segregation of public schools to be unconstitutional in the landmark 1954 Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka case. It was just more step in a protracted march toward desegregation in North Carolina’s public schools. Four African American students became the first to integrate four formerly all-white Charlotte public schools in 1957. In protest, many whites would not allow their children to ride school buses with Black children. Read more in a blog post from UNC Press.
